Insulated Garage Doors
Insulated Garage Doors are a popular product, especially for garages attached to the house. They enable the garage to become a much more usable area of the property. In order to be effective at keeping heat in the garage, an insulated garage door also needs to be draught-proof, as well. Insulated up and over garage doors are very difficult to seal around the edges. The garage doors which offer good all round seals and insulation are limited to the following 3 products.
Generally made from a steel/foam/steel sandwich with thick non-perishable all round rubber seals, these doors can deliver a U value of about 1.3w/m²k. The garage door leaf is approx 40mm thick and gives security and rigidity as added benefits. Various designs, colours and wood-look finishes are available. Generally fitted as an electric garage door, they can be manual if needs be.
Hormann, Carteck and Henderson G60 are the market leaders in the manufacture of high quality insulated sectional garage doors.
The GRP sectional garage door from Wessex has a GRP (glass fibre) and rigid foam construction. The GRP is a natural insulator, making it an attractive option. They are available in numerous woodgrain colours or gloss white. These garage doors are made to measure at no extra cost.
2. Insulated Roller Shutter Garage Doors
Made from 77mm x 18mm foam- filled aluminium slats. The individual slats interlock and, at
the edges, sit in the guide channels which have deep, multiple draught seals. The bottom
draught seal takes out imperfections from the garage floor and seals well. The insulated
roller door is a made to measure product, at no extra cost. It’s full roller box housing makes
it a neat, flexible product, which does not require ceiling-mounted tracks etc.

Not as insulated as the insulated sectional garage door, the foam-filled roller door generally
offers a sufficient level of heat and sound insulation and is a very secure garage door.
These garage doors are available in numerous colours and finishes on short lead times.
3. Insulated Side-Hung Garage Doors
Launched in June 2011, the Carteck GSW 40-L is the first truly insulated side-hinged domestic garage door on the UK market. Made from 40mm thick, foam-filled, steel sections, strong hinges and crushable rubber seals, this robust garage door offers good looks, insulation, draught-proofing and security. Available in various colours and styles. Made-to-measure at no extra cost.

Carteck GSW 40-L Insulated Side-Hinged
Insulated side-hinged garage doors can also be made from GRP (glass fibre) with a foam core in the two doors leaves. Wessex “Premier” quality garage doors have a monkey-fur draught seal all the way round the edge, giving a draught-free installation. Not as finely engineered as the Carteck product or as the insulated sectional and insulated roller doors.
Insulated Up and Over Garage Doors
The leading GRP garage door manufacturer, Wessex offers doors with a foam core. The main disadvantage with any insulated up and over door is that the edges do not seal perfectly, so draughts may remain, making the insulation almost worthless. After sales bottom rubber seals address the main gap, to a limit. Ideal for certain properties where appearance is the most important factor.
Timber Garage Doors
Timber is a natural insulator. Timber up and over garage doors have a gap all the way round the edge, so do leak air. After sales draught seals only partly solve this problem. Timber sectional garage doors have a purpose-made all round seal and the sections interlock well, giving a virtually draught-proof garage. The natural insulation of the timber, however, does not give the same level of insulation as the purpose-made, foam-filled sectional garage doors.
